THE APPROACH
The behaviour of hair. Texture changes everything about a cut. Where weight sits. How a shape falls. How much the hair shrinks. What happens when it moves. We consider all of it before deciding where, how and when to cut.
DRY CUTTING
Cutting in its natural state. For many curls, cutting dry means working with the hair as it naturally sits. Pattern, shrinkage, density and movement are visible rather than predicted. Some hair is worked curl by curl. Some freehand. Some needs a combination of techniques. There is no single method for every head of hair.
SHAPE
Weight changes movement. Where a curl is cut affects where it sits. Removing weight can release movement. Leaving it can create structure. Length, proportion and the relationship between one area and another all affect the finished shape. The technique is chosen for the hair, not imposed on it.
OUR METHOD
An approach that keeps evolving. Cuttlefish has worked with curly and textured hair since 1990. Our curl education has included specialist DevaCut training in New York, but our approach has continued to develop through decades of working with different textures behind the chair. Today, we use what the hair needs rather than following a single prescribed method.
YOUR APPOINTMENT
Before your appointment. Arrive with your hair dry, conditioned and in its natural pattern. Please avoid tying, braiding, straightening or manipulating the hair before your appointment, as this can change the way it sits. Avoid heavy product where possible. We need to see how your hair naturally behaves.
